Broadband Committee News

Tyringham still awaits developments as the Commonwealth tries to get federal funds for expansion of broadband to unserved and underserved areas.  The current estimates are that Western Massachusetts could see access in two to three years. Let's be realistic and call it 2013. Right now it is not expected that this would be "to the home" service.

The Massachusetts Broadband Initiative, which is the agency that is applying for federal funds, estimated this summer that by this coming spring of 2010 we would know if Massachusetts has received enough monies to add onto the $40 million that Governor Patrick has already set aside, to pay for expansion of high-speed broadband. The tecnology would most likely be a "backbone" of fiber optic cable.

As of now the MBI proposed backbone map shows the cable running right through the Tyringham Valley from Route 23 to Route 102. Again, it remains to be seen how towns can find affordable ways to help homeowners have this super service in the home. And of course this is a work-in-progress.

The Tyringham Broadband Committee is working in the meantime to keep Tyrngham is the forefront of MBI's awareness, and to investigate every possible method that could bring better service into the valley and to the Goose Pond area for the interim period that lies ahead.
